Eventually he one a writing contest for his story, "The Manuscript Found in the Bottle." This got him his first job as an editor at a magazine called Southern Literary Messenger. Edgar was a great editor for this magazine and he made the magazine much more successful than it used to be. This job had a very low salary though so Edgar quit. Befor Edgar could get another editing job at a magazine he wrote his first volume of short stories. This volume was called "Tales of Grotesque and Arebesque" which Edgar received copies of and had copyrighted. He did not make any money on this volume though.
